On Friday night, we saw a board coup which may lead to the largest destruction of value since Apple fired Steve Jobs.

The firing of OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman may be the worst firing of any CEO since Steve Jobs in 1985.

However, among all of the speculation as to what happened, and what happens next, it's important to remember the fragility of the technology we're dealing with here, and how each decision taken may affect the future of civilisation.

The race between AI companies isn't to produce more powerful AI. It's to produce an artificial general intelligence (AGI) that's indistinguishable from a human.

AGIs will be completely autonomous beings, with their own goals. And these beings will be smarter than humans.

There's a fascinating short documentary from The Guardian with one of the founders of Open AI, Chief Scientist, Ilya Sutskever.

The probability that AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) will arrive soon is high enough that we should take it seriously, and it's going to be very important to make these very smart, capable systems, aligned with our best interests.

"The future is going to be good for the AIs regardless, it'd be nice if it was good for humans as well". Ilya went on to say.

Whatever happens over the coming years in terms of companies or CEOs who lead the way... the rise of AGI will be the most tumultuous event in human history.

It needs to be ushered in thoughtfully.

Factoring in human ethics, values, and safeguards.

This is an immense challenge for us today, the stakes are too high to get it wrong.

Strong leadership, governance, and human values at the core are a necessity.
