A rectangle inside the rectangle

Someone put a 9:16 rectangle right in the centre of the new Harry Potter trailer and 95% of the info disappeared.

Although this is the trailer, not the show, it's meant someone has accepted that a large share of the views will be watched vertically, so the clips have been chosen accordingly.

I've written before about Matt Damon and Ben Affleck explaining that Netflix repeats plot points three or four times, because they know people are on their phones while watching.

The viewing environment is changing how the work is produced.

But I hope we never go to the extreme where directors compose for a rectangle inside the rectangle and that the beautiful, cinematic wide shots don't survive distribution.

The best content is viewed on a big screen, whether that's the TV, or the cinema, it's definitely not on a phone.

I'd never watch the Harry Potter films on my phone. They're far too good for that.

Hopefully the new one earns the same.
