Meta just shipped MCP for their Ads platform.

Most people in the industry will read that as another vendor announcement. It's not. It's the moment the route to bought media stopped requiring 40-person trading desks.

In March, I ran what I believe was a UK agency’s first programmatic campaign to be setup agenticly through PubMatic. Live in twenty minutes through a chat window.

I thought about every team I'd worked up in or alongside in my media career. Trading. Buying. AdOps. Data analysis. The whole execution stack. Years of work just compressed into a sentence on a screen.

MCP isn't a faster API. APIs give a model access to functions. MCP gives a model access to context plus functions, with the model doing the reasoning. The system doesn't need to be told what to buy. It works it out from what it knows about the brand, the goal, the campaign, the market.

Execution is now a commodity. The reasoning layer is the new battleground.

So the question for every agency leader is straightforward. If buying media is a button, what are clients still paying you for?

The honest answer can only be one thing. The context the model doesn't have. The proprietary data wired into your stack. The competitive intelligence layer. The measurement framework nobody else uses. The point of view on what to test, what to kill, what to scale. Whoever wires the best context wins. That's the moat now.

And a reminder for anyone still running two or three creatives per ad set. Meta's Andromeda model now rewards creative volume over targeting precision. More variants. More angles. More versions for different audiences and moments. With MCP and the rest of the AI stack, there is no excuse left for not generating, testing, and refreshing at pace.

Which is exactly why this transition is going to be slower than it should be. Agencies sell time. Large companies are valued on headcount. If execution collapses, billable hours collapse with it. The business model is pointing one way and the technology is pointing the other. Incentives don't change because the future arrived. They change when someone stops getting paid the old way.

I came up through the layer that's going to automated. I'm not going to pretend that's clean, it's a problem.

But the reality is, the buyers and sellers building MCP context layers right now are the ones who'll matter.

The business model and the technology are now pointing in opposite directions. Turkeys don't vote for Christmas...
